Community bank seeks pledges

The SurreySave credit union is looking for at least 500 people to pledge their support so it can get started.

The union, supported by local councils and other bodies, is aiming to provide affordable financial services to everyone living or working in Surrey.

Credit unions are savings and loan banks, mainly helping the low-paid.

Surrey needs 500 pledges before it can begin operating and is distributing a leaflet across the county in order to gain the necessary support.

Several pledges have already been made via the SurreySave website and it is hoped the leaflet will make it easier for people to give their backing.

Steering Group member Steve Bonsor said: "Momentum is firmly behind the idea of a local bank for local people in Surrey, and we want to make it as easy as possible for these people to show their support for the scheme.

"It is important to remember that your pledge commits you to nothing - it's a sign of your support."
