A Surrey bar and nightclub has been forced to close after fire damaged the roof and a kitchen area.

Nearly 40 firefighters tackled the blaze at the Noir Bar in Heath Road, next to Weybridge Station, which broke out at about 1810 BST on Tuesday.

About 10 people attending a business networking meeting were evacuated from the building after the alarm went off.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation was under way into the cause of the blaze.

The Noir bar, formerly known as Abaya, had recently undergone a two-year refurbishment.

"It is ironic that the renovations had just been finished and now this has set it back again," said Paul Benewith, organiser of the networking event.

"But I have been in touch with the owners, who said it will make them stronger."

The fire was contained upstairs and did not spread to the nightclub area but it suffered water and smoke damage.

The building will need a new roof and will be closed while the repairs are carried out.
