Thieves lift stone from driveway

Thieves have lifted two tonnes of stone from a driveway in Surrey in an overnight raid, police have said.

Officers said the stolen York stone paving was taken from a house in Gomshall and valued at £3,000.

Det Ch Insp Ian Chandler said the slabs were lifted from their concrete setting and a large vehicle would have been needed to take them away.

The theft happened in the Burrows Cross area between 2200 GMT on Friday and 0700 GMT on Saturday.

Mr Chandler said the loss was not discovered until Saturday morning.

He added that there had been a number of thefts of York stone and warned residents and businesses to be on their guard against unusual activity.
