Hospital wards evacuated in fire

Patients from two wards at a hospital in Surrey had to be evacuated following a fire on the second floor roof.

The blaze at Frimley Park Hospital, in Frimley, was contained to a plant room on the roof above the children's ward.

The hospital said about 40 patients from the children's ward and another ward left the building calmly and safely. No-one was injured.

There was some damage to the children's ward, mainly from water used to put out the fire coming through the roof.

Six fire engines were sent to the scene after the fire broke out at 1718 BST, and it was extinguished in 90 minutes.

A spokesman for the hospital said the incident was dealt with promptly and professionally, and patients and visitors acted calmly throughout.

"The hospital implemented its planned procedure to limit activity to the rest of the hospital while the fire was dealt with," a statement said.

The hospital said it was planning to open to normal admissions later on Friday evening.
