New garden waste scheme launched

The authority said it would save 600,000 plastic sacks going to landfill

Ten thousand wheelie bins will soon be delivered to households in Reigate and Banstead following the launch of the council's new garden waste service.

More than 4,000 residents have signed up to scheme which will replace plastic sack green waste collections.

The brown wheelie bins will be delivered to residents over the next three weeks.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council said bin bag collections for garden waste would continue until 17 October.

Councillor Julian Ellacott said: "It is well known now that plastic sacks take a long time to degrade in landfill and by switching to bin collections we estimate that we will save over 600,000 plastic sacks going to landfill.

"In addition, to help people with small gardens or no room to store a bin, there is an option to either share a bin with a neighbour or a single reusable bag will be substituted."
