Woman hit by car dies in hospital

A 60-year-old woman has died in hospital after she was hit by a car in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Police said the local woman was struck by a Volkswagen Golf travelling north on the Oxshott Road on Friday evening.

She was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital where she died from her injuries. The woman has not been named but her family have been informed.

A police spokeswoman said a 25-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Appealing for witnesses, she said the crash happened at about 1730 BST near the Tesco superstore.

The road was closed for five hours while officers investigated.
