Roadworks 'will not affect trees'

Trees
The council said the trees along the side of the road would not be removed

Fears that roadworks will see trees felled on a country road are unfounded, Surrey County Council has said.

The authority said the A245 carriageway at Stoke d'Abernon "will only be slightly expanded", and the trees will not be removed.

It said the road widening was to install pedestrian crossing points, and would make the road safer.

Drainage work is also being carried out and ditches cleared, so a footpath can be created on one side of the road.

Councillor David Munro said a right-hand turn was also being introduced for traffic heading from Leatherhead to Cobham, to tackle congestion.

The work is expected to take eight to ten weeks.
