'Speedwatch' team to monitor cars

Residents in a part of Surrey who are worried about excessive speed of traffic along their roads are being asked to volunteer to monitor them.

They told officers in the Mount Hermon East policing district of their concerns over speeding traffic on several roads in the area.

Now officers want them to volunteer to officially monitor the vehicles under a Community Speedwatch scheme.

They will be given training and the information will be acted on by police.

PC Scott Kemp, one of the neighbourhood officers, said: "Community schemes have been running successfully in many streets across the borough and they have had a positive effect in reducing speed as well as re-educating drivers about the dangers of driving too fast."

Volunteers are not expected to stop vehicles but to record speeds of motorists in a log.

Offenders are identified from the data provided and sent a letter of advice. Repeat offenders are targeted for enforcement where appropriate.
