Prisoner, 20, dies in jail cell

A prisoner serving an eight-month jail sentence has died after he was found hanging in his cell.

Scott Sadler-Marriott, 20, who was convicted of threatening a witness, was discovered by staff at HMP High Down in Banstead, Surrey, on Tuesday.

Staff tried to resuscitate him but he was pronounced dead by paramedics at about 0020 BST on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the prison service said Sadler Marriott was not considered a suicide risk.

The spokeswoman added: "Our sympathies are with Mr Sadler-Marriot's family.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
