War memorial paving slabs stolen

Thieves have taken hundreds of pounds worth of paving slabs from a war memorial in Surrey.

The memorial on Petworth Road, Witley, was targeted on Tuesday night. A "large quantity" of slabs with an estimated value of about £500 were taken.

Insp Simon Dann from Surrey Police said the crime had "shocked local residents" and called the thieves "callous".

He said people should be wary of cheap garden materials and appealed for witnesses to contact police.

He said: "Stealing from a war memorial is a pretty callous thing to do.

"With the summer approaching the demand for this type of material is going to increase and we are therefore warning residents to be on their guard for any suspicious activity."
