Headway helps brain injury victims learn to cope with their disabilities

A Surrey charity which helps people with brain injuries is appealing for temporary accommodation.

Headway based in Stoughton, Guildford, is about to redevelop its site into a state-of-the-art day centre, with 10 units of social housing.

But it has been unable to find suitable accommodation for 12 months while the work is being carried out.

The charity said it needed somewhere that was close to public transport in Guildford and had wheelchair access.

Learn to cope

Oliver McGeachy, chief executive of Headway Surrey, said: "What we are looking for is someone who has got suitable premises but who would be prepared to let them to us on a short-term lease.

"We need wheelchair access as very few of them [patients] can drive so we're looking at premises which are close to public transport. It needs to be reasonably central."

Headway helps victims of brain injuries, who often have severe memory problems, learn to cope with their disabilities.

Many of the patients have been injured in road or sporting accidents or as a result of an operation that has gone wrong.

Mr McGeachy said: "They tend to lose a lot of things that we take for granted, their memory, knowing where they are and getting on with every day things. What we do is help them build strategies to cope with these disabilities."
