Bogus workers found at takeaways

Two Suffolk food outlets face could face heavy fines after illegal workers were found by the UK Border Agency.

A woman, 25, and a man, 26, both failed asylum seekers from China, were found at Dragon Express, Queens Way, Ipswich.

A Chinese man, 24, who had entered the UK illegally and a Malaysian woman, 24, who had overstayed her visa, were also found at Yummy Chinese in Queen's Way.

A 24-year-old Afghan man who had overstayed his visa and a Chinese man, 32, were also found at the same outlet.

'Right checks'

Dragon Express and Yummy Chinese face fines of up to £20,000 and £30,000 respectively if they are unable to prove the correct pre-employment checks were carried out.

Chief Immigration Officer Jack Davis said: "Illegal working is not a victimless crime.

"It undercuts honest employers and has a serious impact on communities, taking jobs from those who are genuinely allowed to work.

"The UK Border Agency works with employers so they understand the rules, but businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks before taking on migrant workers.

"If they fail to do so, they face heavy fines."
