Care for young wins village prize

A Suffolk village has won a community prize for its welcoming and inclusive approach to young people.

Easton was named Village of the Year 2009, after impressing the judges with its community spirit.

"Its commitment showed an understanding teenagers in rural areas can suffer from a lack of things to do.

"They also showed a willingness to do something about it," said Robert Whiting, cabinet member for resources at Suffolk Coastal District Council.

"Easton's attitude to young people stood out," he said.

"We were also impressed by its plans for affordable homes, which would make it easier for local people to remain in the area, as well as a new children's play area."

An engraved silver cup and £200 will be awarded to Easton for winning the competition, and joint runners-up Brandeston and Friston will receive £125 each.

Westerfield, which came third, will get £75.

The presentation ceremony will take place in September.
