Football stadium gets £1m backing

A council has put its support behind plans for a new football stadium in a Suffolk town by pledging to contribute £1m towards its construction.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council's cabinet voted to allocate the funding to Bury Town Football Club's relocation at a meeting on Wednesday.

The £2m project would see the club move from its home at Ram Meadow to land at Moreton Hall.

The club will now apply for other grants for the rest of the funding.

There are hopes the Football Association will contribute to the project.

If it goes ahead, two floodlit pitches would be created, along with the new stadium, a clubhouse and changing facilities.

A council spokeswoman said the cabinet's decision paved the way for a more detailed plan to be put together, including a consultation with stakeholders.
