£1m hope for new football stadium

A plan to put £1m towards a proposal for a new football stadium in a Suffolk town is to be discussed by councillors.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council has revealed it will consider giving the grant to help Bury Town Football Club build a new stadium.

The £2m project would see the club relocate from its home at Ram Meadow to Moreton Hall. Funding would also be sought from the Football Association.

The council's cabinet will debate the grant proposal on 3 December.

If the project goes ahead, two floodlit pitches would be created, along with the new stadium, a clubhouse and changing facilities.

Lynsey Alexander, the council's portfolio holder for culture and sport, said: "Cabinet backing for this project will again underline our commitment to improving the wellbeing of our community by investing in facilities for sport and exercise."

Russell Ward, chairman of Bury Town Football Club, said council backing would make it a "true community football club".
