St Edmundsbury Cathedral roof was significantly changed in Victorian times
|
A £500,000 scheme has begun to restore the roof of Suffolk's only cathedral.
Repairs to the nave roof inside St Edmundsbury Cathedral in Bury St Edmunds are being funded by English Heritage and other donations.
For two weeks scaffolding will prevent access to the nave, with entry through the cloisters instead. The repairs will be taking place for about six months.
A higher pitched roof was installed at the cathedral in Victorian times by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott.
The cathedral shop and refectory will be open as usual during the project.
