Police who have spoken to nearly 100 people in an inquiry into a sex attack on a girl, 12, have said there are eight more people they want to talk to.

The girl was on the old railway line in Haverhill, Suffolk, when she was pulled into bushes and sexually assaulted on the afternoon of 24 July.

She was with a friend at the time but the other girl managed to get away.

On Friday, police had spoken to 98 people but are now looking to trace eight more potential witnesses.

The attacker was white, aged in his 20s or 30s, with short dark hair, and wore sunglasses, blue jeans, a white T-shirt and trainers.

Two of the people police would like to speak to are a woman who was pushing a buggy and another woman who was walking a black dog.

The animal, which the girls smiled at and stroked, is described as like a Labrador but smaller.

They would also like to talk to a boy who was riding a red bike and a girl on a pink bike with stabilisers.

The pair were with a slim woman who had brown shoulder-length hair.

Three teenage boys, aged about 14 and dressed in jeans and trainers, who were in the area at the time could also be potential witnesses, a police spokesman said.

Acting Det Insp Trevor Prior, from Suffolk Police, said: "Even if you aren't one of these people, if you were using the old railway line between 1300 BST and 1430 BST on Thursday 24 July and haven't yet spoken to an officer, I would urge you to come forward"
