Emergency unit opened at hospital

Garrett Anderson Centre
The department is the first part of a new development at Ipswich Hospital

A Suffolk hospital has opened a new emergency department as part of a £26m treatment centre.

Opening four months later than planned, the Garrett Anderson Centre is the biggest development in 30 years at Ipswich Hospital.

The emergency department is twice the size of existing facilities and is the first part of the four-storey centre to be opened.

The centre will also cater for day surgery, elective and critical care.

It has been named in honour of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, renowned as the country's first female GP and a mayor of Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

A separate children's department with play areas and four treatment rooms has been built within the emergency department.
