Peace campaigners at US airbase
Six peace campaigners have chained themselves to the gates of a US airbase in Suffolk.

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament said the action on Monday morning at RAF Lakenheath was in protest at what they said was bombing in Afghanistan.

Mell Harrison of CND said the group had decided to gather there amid concerns a protest in London had been banned.

"This is a US base in our country... someone has to make a stand," she said. Police later cut free the protesters.

The action came as the Stop The War Coalition planned to go ahead with a march on Parliament to call on the government to withdraw British troops from Iraq, despite fears the rally could be banned by police.

The Suffolk base has been the site of many protests, mainly due to claims that nuclear bombs are stored at the base.

Last year eight people broke into the base and chained themselves to the gate of a munitions store.
