Borough is awarded unitary status
Ipswich Borough Council is to become a unitary authority.

The borough will now take over control of services such as education, social services and trading standards, from Suffolk County Council.

At present the borough council is responsible for a wide range of local services, including planning, housing, waste and leisure services.

The unitary bid was supported by all three main political parties on the borough council.

However Suffolk County Council said it believed the bid is a "waste of money" and would impact on services.
