Inquiry into port rail expansion
Freight at the Port of Felixstowe
A dual rail line would see 40 trains in and out of the port each day
Plans for a major expansion of rail freight at the Port of Felixstowe in Suffolk go before a public inquiry.

The port wants to dual four miles of single track between the villages of Levington and Trimley.

This would allow 40 freight trains into and out of the container port each day by the year 2020.

Port officials believe a dual railway line would take about 500,000 lorries off the road, improving traffic conditions on roads such as the A14.

The port also plans to build three new sidings in the Ranelagh Road marshalling yards in Ipswich.

A decision on the outcome of the inquiry will not be known until later in the year.
