Late DJ Peel's 78rpm songs on CD
John Peel
John Peel was renowned for his eclectic music tastes
A CD featuring a "wild selection" of 78rpm records from late DJ John Peel's collection chosen by him and his wife Sheila has been released.

John Peel and Sheila: The Pig's Big 78s has been released by the record company Trikont, which is based in Germany.

Plans for the album were at an advanced stage shortly before his death on holiday in Peru in October 2004.

In November 2004 thousands attended the funeral of Mr Peel in Suffolk, where he and his wife Sheila Ravenscroft lived.

The title of the album is drawn from a popular slot on John Peel's late night Radio 1 show, which saw Sheila, affectionately known as "The Pig", introduce weird and wonderful 78 revolutions-per-minute records.

The 23 tracks range from English brass bands, schmaltzy dance music and yodelling, to early rock and roll, and traditional music from China and Africa.

It also includes an extensive interview with Sheila explaining why she and Merseyside-born John chose these particular tracks.
