Anger as MP leaks critical report

Waveney MP Bob Blizzard says he has done nothing wrong
Suffolk MP Bob Blizzard has been reported to the Parliamentary Standards Commission over the leaking of a report which criticises a local council.

Mr Blizzard released details before publication of an Audit Commission report which says Waveney District Council's performance was "weak".

The council is angry the news got out before official publication.

The MP says he has done nothing wrong. He released the information because he believed it needed to be made public.

Conservative council leader Mark Bee, who accused the MP for Waveney of breaking an official embargo, said the report - part of a national survey - was welcomed and the council was already addressing its criticisms.

He said the council felt the MP's action undermined efforts to share the information in a co-ordinated way with staff and the public.

David Young, leader of the Lib Dems in Waveney, said he was upset by what he regarded as a breach of government rules.

Mr Blizzard told BBC News he had been given the "reliable hearsay" in advance of the official report and he had repeated it to local press two weeks ago in the belief it needed to be in the public domain.
