An inquest has heard the details of the deaths of two doctors and their son this week near Ipswich.

A detective said Jaya Prakash Chiti, 41, and his son Pranau, two, had wounds consistent with a fall into the River Orwell, where they were found.

Mr Chiti's wife Anupama, 36, found at the family's home, had been stabbed.

Coroner Roger Stewart on Thursday opened the inquests then adjourned the hearings for a date to be fixed.

Detective Inspector Stuart Hudson told the inquest Mr Chiti died of multiple injuries, Pranau of head injuries and Mrs Chiti of multiple stab wounds.

Blood inside the car

Police believe Mr Chiti stabbed his wife to death then leapt off a 160 feet bridge over the River Orwell with his son.

The couple's 11-year-old son Ani was found in the house in Rushmere St Andrew, Ipswich, uninjured.

Det Insp Stuart Hudson told the inquest that police had been alerted by a 999 call reporting a car on the Orwell River Bridge in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He said: "They discovered an amount of blood inside."

Police then spotted the bodies of the father and son below.

Police are trying to discover why Mr Chiti killed his wife, son and himself, and say the investigation is likely to take months.

Mr and Mrs Chiti both worked at Ipswich Hospital.

Mr Chiti was due to start a new job as a senior houseman in the accident and emergency department on Wednesday. He had been working in the department as a locum for the past few weeks.

His wife, who practised under her maiden name of Dr Anupama Damera, was a consultant radiologist who specialised in breast screening.

The family had moved to the Ipswich area from Nottingham in the summer after leaving their native India about five years ago.
