Fancy dress revellers set alight in Stoke-on-Trent

A man has been arrested after two Staffordshire University students had their clothes set alight at a fancy dress party.

The men, aged 19 and 20, were taken to hospital after the incident at Staffordshire University Students Union on the campus in Stoke-on-Trent.

They were taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire. Neither had life-threatening injuries.

A 19-year-old man was arrested bailed by police until mid February.

The 19-year-old injured student was kept in overnight, while the 20-year-old was released after treatment.

Police have appealed for witnesses.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said the 20-year-old man suffered burns to his back, arms, neck and particularly serious burns to his left hand while the 19-year-old man suffered superficial burns to his neck.

A Staffordshire University spokeswoman said: "The University's first concern is with the two students who sustained injuries and we will be making sure that they are given the support they need."
