Man charged after death of girl

A man has been charged after the death of a teenage girl who was hit by a car that was being followed by police.

Barry Hardy, 24, from Cheadle, Staffordshire, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after Jessica Harrison, 17, died.

The girl, from Tean, was walking along Mill Road, Cheadle, at noon on Sunday when she was hit. She suffered head injuries.

Mr Hardy is due before magistrates in Fenton on Tuesday morning.

The other man arrested in connection with the inquiry has been released and faces no further action.

Jessica died in hospital on Sunday night, police said.

Ch Supt Jon Drake said: "Our deepest sympathies remain with Jessica's family at this very distressing time for them."
