Schools could have 20mph limits

Speed limit sign
Some schools have already been chosen to pilot the idea

Councillors are considering plans to limit speeds outside all schools in Staffordshire to 20mph.

If the proposals by the county council go ahead, they could be the first of their kind in the West Midlands.

Those proposing the plans said there was a much higher chance of a child surviving a crash when motorists drove at lower speeds.

Areas around several schools in the county have already been chosen to pilot the lower speed limits.

The number of children killed or seriously injured on the roads in the county fell from 21 in 2007 to 17 in 2008.
