Man charged with pensioner murder

A man has been charged with the murder of a 79-year-woman who was attacked in her home.

Ellen Portsmouth died in hospital on Friday after she was assaulted at her house in Wellington Street, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire.

The 24-year-old suspect is due before magistrates in the town on Monday.

Neighbourhood policing unit commander Insp Javid Oomer said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mrs Portsmouth."

He added: "Although this is a rare and isolated incident it's undoubtedly had an impact on the local community."
