Four treated in chemical incident

Four men have been treated for sore eyes and throats following a suspected chemical incident.

Emergency services were called to the Potteries Shopping Centre in Stoke-on-Trent during the afternoon.

Ambulance crews said three policemen and a staff member had been exposed to a substance found in toilets on the centre's top floor.

The top floor was evacuated as a result. Police later said the substance was a detergent.

Supt Bernie O'Reilly of Staffordshire Police said specialist staff from the fire service had been called to deal with the substance.

Ambulance staff said the four men had not needed hospital treatment.
