Police see rise in petrol thefts

The number of drivers leaving petrol stations without paying for fuel is increasing because of the rising cost of petrol and diesel, police have said.

Officers in Staffordshire said the number of so-called "bilking" offences had risen over April and June.

They said they had also come across more cases of motorists having their petrol tanks drained by thieves.

Police are urging garage and car owners to take extra precautions to avoid falling victim to the crime.

Sgt Jim Mills, of Staffordshire Police, said: "As well as causing real financial hardship and inconvenience to crime victims, people who steal fuel are placing themselves in great danger and petrol and diesel are extremely flammable."
