Two boys have been arrested in connection with an incident in which a Stoke-on-Trent teenager suffered severe petrol burns.

Jordan Lawrence, 13, from Carmountside, is in a critical but stable condition after the incident on the site of a former school in Abbey Hulton.

The boy was injured on fields known locally as Abbey Greenway on Friday.

Two boys aged 13 and 14 were arrested on suspicion of assault and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Jordan underwent several hours of surgery at Birmingham Children's Hospital at the weekend after suffering 40% burns while with other boys in the Leek Road area.

Jordan's mother Samantha Lawrence said in a statement: "Before this incident Jordan was a happy, outgoing boy who'd just turned 13 and loved listening to music and playing computer games.

"I am upset and angry and want to know exactly what happened to him on Friday night."

Det Sgt Gary Evans, of Staffordshire Police, said officers were keen to hear from anyone else with information who had yet to make contact.

He appealed for anyone who saw Jordan making his way home before 2045 BST on Friday to come forward.
