Speed humps cut after complaints
A total of 20 speed humps in a village are to be removed or modified after a six-year campaign by residents.

The humps are among 146 in a traffic calming scheme installed in Great Wyrley, Staffordshire, in 2003.

Campaigner Joseph Gregory said the group was "ecstatic" at the move which was "very positive" for Great Wyrley.

Staffordshire County Council said the "successful scheme" had cut accidents but the modifications followed drivers' complaints about the number of humps.

The work will begin next week and is expected to take two weeks.

The council said highways officers had been asked to look at what could be done to reduce the impact of the humps "while maintaining the positive accident results".

'Long review'

A spokesman said the traffic calming measures in the village had led to an 80% reduction in accidents involving children and 100% reduction in accidents involving pedestrians.

Ten road humps will be removed and 10 others are to be modified. The 20 humps were of a "different profile" which were not in use anymore, the spokesman added.

Mr Gregory said residents were delighted at the decision.

"We are very pleased about it. It's the start of what it hopefully a long review," he said.

"Even though there are only 20 involved we feel as a group very, very positive for the residents of Great Wyrley."

The county council added that the work will cost £15,000 which would be paid for through two councillors' local member initiative scheme funds.
