Drain thefts 'endangering lives'
Metal thieves are "putting lives at risk" by stealing drain covers and grids from roads in Staffordshire, highways chiefs have said.

County council leaders said more than 80 of the covers and grates had been stolen over the past few months.

They said that not only did the thefts cost taxpayers tens of thousands of pounds but it was also dangerous.

Council chiefs have joined forces with the police to urge people to report any suspicious activity.

Staffordshire County Council highways spokesperson Carol Dean said: "This is no laughing matter.

"Not only is this costing the taxpayer but it is putting lives at risk, particularly cyclists and motorcyclists who are really vulnerable.

"This is a matter of pure greed and reckless selfishness that could cost lives. This isn't just theft of public money, but potential manslaughter."
