Nursing staff are being asked not to display their uniforms outside of their hospital in an effort to cut down the spread of infections.
The rule is one of a few introduced to stop infections such as clostridium difficile (C Diff) which can cause severe stomach upsets and can be fatal.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.
Chief nurse Sarah Byrom says she will take action if anyone breaks the rule.
She said: "We have a uniform policy which states quite clearly that nurses should not be seen out in their uniforms.
"They should wear a full cover coat.
"I have made it clear that if any member of the public sees a member of nursing staff and can see the name of that person than I shall take action with that member of staff."
