BNP make gains in Staffordshire

The British National Party (BNP) has won three seats on Stoke-on-Trent City Council, although the authority remains under no overall control.

It gained Labour leader Terry Doughty's seat in Weston and Meir as well as the Abbey Green and Bentilee and Townsend seats but lost Longton North to Labour.

Elected mayor Mark Meredith said he would not associate with the party.

Tamworth Borough, Lichfield and South Staffordshire councils remain under Conservative control.
