Three people have been taken to hospital after five lorries collided on the M6 motorway in Staffordshire.
Debris was strewn across the carriageway between junctions 11 and 10a southbound near Cannock.
One man suffered serious head injuries and two others had to be cut free from the wreckage and flown to hospital, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.
Two lanes remain closed as police remove a vehicle and drivers were temporarily diverted at junction 11.
'On scene quickly'
Tailbacks stretched to junction 12 after the accident, Central Motorway Police Group said.
Two air ambulances landed at the side of the carriageway to take the injured to hospital.
Dr Matthew Wyse said: "The incident was a very severe accident involving several large vehicles.
"The ambulance staff were on scene very quickly and worked together with other emergency services to ensure that the patients where treated as quickly as possible."
