The chairman of Stoke-on-Trent's main hospital, which has been faced with 1,000 job cuts, has stressed there will be jobs for trainee nurses.
More than 80 nurses from Staffordshire have been offered posts at Cairns Base Hospital in Queensland, Australia, after it advertised in the county.
The University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust's chairman said it has also gone abroad in the past.
Mike Brereton said: "That's the way the world works I'm afraid."
He added: "When we were short of nurses in this country, we went abroad and recruited good nursing staff.
"Clearly there are one or two hospitals in Australia doing the same."
