Police have charged a man with four counts of murder following an explosion and fire at a house in Staffordshire.

The charges relate to the deaths of three children, aged 16, 10 and 7, and a 44-year-old man in the house at Cheddleton, near Leek.

The man charged is understood to be Mark Goldstraw, 31, from Leek, who was arrested after the explosion on Friday.

He is currently in police custody in Stoke-on-Trent and will appear at Fenton Magistrates' court on Tuesday.

Roderick Hine died along with Samantha Carter, 16, Patricia Carter, 10, and Marcus Carter, 7, at the house on Thursday.

Their mother, Amanda Carter, 35, was working a night-shift at the time of the explosion.

Mr Hine was Amanda Carter's partner and the family were described as very close.

The house was severely damaged by the explosion and the ensuing fire.
