Mark Buzec

The family of a missing man say they are having a "terrible" time while tests are done on human remains found near to where he was last seen.

High school teacher Mark Buzec, 32, originally from Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, vanished nearly six years ago while on holiday in Italy.

Hikers found a skeleton on Filicudi island, off Sicily, on Wednesday.

Mr Buzec's mother, Pauline, who lives in Burton, said: "We are in limbo. It is dreadful."

Mr Buzec was camping alone on the Isle of Salina, off the coast of Sicily, when he vanished.

His backpack and passport were found at his campsite.

His mother added: "You go to bed thinking about it and you wake up thinking about it. It is with you all the time.

"All of a sudden something like this happens and it brings it all back and you are going through it all again."

The local authorities said the remains were in such a remote area of the island off Sicily that they had to be removed by helicopter.

Tests are now being carried out to identify whose body it is.

Mr Buzec has never been found, despite an extensive search and appeals by his family.

He had moved from Burton to become a teacher at Forest Hill School in south London.
