Villagers wanted as speed police

Volunteers will be trained by police officers

Residents of villages in south Cheshire are being asked to set up their own checkpoints to catch speeding drivers.

Volunteers being sought in the Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council area will be given specialist training to deal with any angry drivers who confront them.

Successful candidates will be asked to take down the details of motorists who do not keep to speed limits and will be trained to use speed gun cameras.

They will pass on registration details to the police but are not expected to confront speeding drivers.

Offending motorists would be sent an official warning letter and could face being fined and having penalty points added to their licence if caught again.

The volunteers would be supplied with high-visibility jackets and work in pairs at locations chosen by the police.
