A man is being questioned by police after a fire destroyed more than 1,000 tonnes of straw.

Crews from across Sussex and Hampshire tackled the blazing straw bales in a field at Lavant, near Chichester.

Firefighters were at the scene for most of Tuesday after the overnight fire, which was visible for miles.

It was the third incident in as many weeks in the area involving barns and straw. Police have asked that anyone with information contacts them.

A fire service spokesman said the blaze on Monday night was being treated as arson.

"It could well have been deliberate and we are keeping an open mind," he explained.

He added that the fire and the other similar blazes were not yet being definitely linked.

Two weeks ago a hay barn at Copse Farm, Tangmere, was gutted.
