Widow walks for cancer sufferers

More than 100 people braved wind and rain to walk 10km (6.2 miles) along Brighton seafront at dawn to raise money for prostate cancer sufferers.

Sunday's walk was organised by Maureen Dickson, of Surrenden Road, Brighton, whose husband Mike died from the disease at the age of 66.

The walk was the second organised in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity.

"We raised nearly £4,000 last year and I hope it will be at least the same amount this time," she said.

'Emotional experience'

"The weather was filthy, but it was a brilliant day," Mrs Dickson added.

"After Mike's diagnosis I wanted to do something to help other men affected by the disease and to honour his memory.

"Organising the Dawn Walk has been an extremely emotional experience for me and I have been overwhelmed by the amount of local support I've received."

The charity said it hoped to repeat the walk on the first Sunday in September in future years and that people would organise their own events in other parts of the country.
