The 26-year-old wife of a Sussex pensioner found dead in Gambia has told police she knocked him unconscious and then set him alight.

African-born Kate West had originally claimed that William West, 76, was taken from their home in Sanyang and killed by five Nigerian men.

It was the latest of several stories being treated with caution, said Gambia Police spokesman Aziz Bojang.

He said the possibility of accomplices being involved could not be ruled out.

'Heavy object'

The assistant police superintendent said: "She has told police that she hit him over the head with a heavy object which we are still trying to recover.

"She has told us that she murdered her husband on her own, without anyone's help.

"This is the latest of several stories she has given us, and whether that is true or not, it is not possible to say."

Police said Mrs West led officers to a bag containing the charred remains of her husband's body just outside the perimeter fence of their property.

The Dublin-born businessman, from Hastings, East Sussex, had lived with his young wife in a luxury four-bedroom, beachside home in the African fishing village.
