Thousands of runners and spectators have turned out for the Hastings Half Marathon, with 4,500 competitors on the starting line.
Sunday's race, which is in its 22nd year, is seen as an excellent warm up for the London Marathon in April.
More than 90% of those who take part go on to run in the capital, but the race still has its share of fun runners.
Race director Eric Hardwick said a big part of its charm came from the support given by the whole East Sussex town.
"The runners say we're not the biggest half marathon, but we're the best," he said.
Scenic loop
"Churches, pubs, businesses - everybody comes out for Hastings Half Marathon. It's a fantastic experience."
Veteran runner Lawrence Page, who has learning difficulties, has taken part every year but one since the race began.
He has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity.
"It's quite fun, it keeps me fit and I love doing it," he said.
The race starts and finishes on the seafront and traces a scenic loop around the town.
Lorraine Pooley, a first-time competitor from Crowborough, was inspired to run after having to have her leg amputated below the knee.
"I am a good wife and I am a good mum but I want to push myself that little bit extra," she said.
