A stick of rock and a football shirt are among items that have been buried in a time capsule on the site of a new art gallery and cultural centre.
The new gallery will be located in Eastbourne's cultural quarter
Primary school pupils took park in the ceremony where the new Cultural Centre in Eastbourne will be located.
Other items inside the capsule include a copy of the Eastbourne Herald and postage stamps featuring Beachy Head.
The Cultural Centre, next to the Congress Theatre, will be officially opened in 2007.
Wednesday's ceremony was performed by West Rise Primary School pupils Michaela Coady and Max Hollobone, who along with their classmates won a competition to decide the contents of the capsule.
They were joined by the leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Ian Lucas, and Emma Gibson, of the construction company, Bluestone.
Mr Lucas said the new centre would inspire every visitor "to think more widely about the world around them".
"Eastbourne is very fortunate to have such an exciting development taking place in the heart of the town," he said.
