Man bailed after Milly questions

A man arrested in connection with the murder of Surrey teenager Milly Dowler in 2002 has been released on bail.

The unnamed 36-year-old, from West Drayton, west London, was questioned at a police station in Surrey after his arrest on Wednesday.

Police said he had connections with the Walton-on-Thames area of Surrey where Milly, 13, went missing on 21 March. He was not a "nominated suspect".

Surrey Police said the man was due to face further questions on 20 September.

Officers described the man as "someone we need to eliminate".

'Beautiful daughter'

Milly's remains were found in woods at Yateley Heath, near Fleet, Hampshire, six months after her disappearance near Walton-on-Thames railway station as she walked home from school.

Her killer has never been found.

This year her family made a fresh appeal for information on the eve of the third anniversary of her disappearance.

A statement said: "We need to know the name and see the face of the person who murdered our beautiful daughter.

"This year, her friends have embarked upon their A-levels.

Red car seen

"Watching them grow up and start to think about their futures is a constant reminder of what Milly might have been doing now."

A week earlier, police appealed for information about a red car which they believe was used to abduct the schoolgirl.

The vehicle was seen on CCTV near the railway station less than 100 yards away from where Milly disappeared and less than 25 minutes before when she was last seen.

Det Ch Insp Brian Marjoram said a recent development uncovered the lead.

A garden in Milly's memory created at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in Surrey was judged the Best In Show earlier this week.
