Cliff suicide watch 'needs funds'

A man whose wife killed herself at Beachy Head is calling for more to be done to stop people committing suicide at the notorious clifftop.

Keith Lane said his wife Maggie could still be alive if there was a more organised 24-hour patrol to spot distressed people.

A voluntary patrol scheme in the area at night prevented 24 deaths in 2004.

But Eastbourne Borough Council said there are enough prevention measures and signs along the cliff path.

A spokesman said the council is working alongside the police and coastguard to prevent people taking their lives.

Mr Lane's wife lost her life at the famous beauty spot in March 2004.

She was one of 38 people who jumped to their death from the clifftop last year and her husband thinks the problem is getting worse.

"Recently I spoke to a 17-year-old boy who had come all the way from Mansfield to jump," he said.

"We need a 24-hour watch as it's been proven that having patrols has been very very successful.

"The council need to find it in their hearts to fund it so we can get a watch up and running quicker."
