Best released after assault claim
George Best arrives at Staines police station
George Best denies the alleged assault
George Best has left Staines police station after being questioned following an allegation of assault.

Surrey Police said a 59-year-old man had been arrested over an allegation of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a 34-year-old woman.

Mr Best was told to return to a Surrey station on 6 July for more questioning.

Mr Best's agent, Phil Hughes, said his client was "categorically" denying the alleged assault, which was said to have taken place in Ewell on Tuesday.

It is claimed the incident occurred outside the home of his former girlfriend Gina Devivo and involved one of her friends, Vicky Pope.

Categorical denial

The football legend said nothing when he arrived shortly after 1310 BST.

The former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star spent more than nine hours at the police station in Surrey and was released on police bail.

Mr Hughes said earlier on Thursday: "We are certainly denying it categorically that he assaulted this woman and we will be attending the police station to hear their version.

"He's denying that he punched her, there possibly has been some exchange and some jostling, I don't know."
