Steven Kelly smashed windows and hit a guard before the riot

An inmate who started a riot at Lewes Prison which caused £60,000 worth of damage because he had a toothache, has had four months added to his sentence.
Steven Kelly, formerly of Chichester Place, Brighton, and another inmate used staves to smash windows after he was refused stronger painkillers.
Two guards had to escape after the windows were smashed and Kelly then hit another guard with a wooden stave.
Lewes Crown Court heard once the three guards had fled the riot began.

It must have been terrifying for any prison officer who found themselves isolated in front of you armed with a weapon

About 30 inmates began smashing up and vandalising a wing at the prison last October after blankets were thrown over video cameras.
Control was not restored at HMP Lewes until the following day.
Kelly, who is serving four years for conspiring to burgle, had admitted a public order offence, criminal damage to the value of £1,506 and assault.
The court was told he was in "considerable pain" due to long-term dental problems which had resulted in the removal of 21 teeth.
'No excuse'
Passing sentence Judge David Rennie said: "I do not believe that you intended your conduct to lead to a prison riot.
"I am persuaded you were in great pain that day. It is an explanation, no more, but can never excuse the way you behaved.
"It must have been terrifying for any prison officer who found themselves isolated in front of you armed with a weapon.
"I do not sentence you for the fact other inmates jumped on the bandwagon. That was a disgrace."
The second inmate who triggered the riot was released before charges were brought and is wanted by police.
