Images of people's lives behind the doors of their terraced homes in Sheffield have become the focus of a new photography exhibition.

Artist Richard Hanson, who is from Pitsmoor near Sheffield, interviewed 20 people from the Page Hall area of the city in their homes and places of work.

Mr Hanson said he wanted to show how different people's lives were even though their houses all look the same.

The Inside Out exhibition was commissioned by Sheffield City Council.

Transcripts of interviews with residents are displayed alongside the portraits.

Mr Hanson said: "Because the area is so densely populated neighbours lead semi-public lives.

"Each yard backs on to another. I photographed a cricket match, a bonsai tree farm, and a ferret sanctuary within a couple of hundred yards.

"You literally turn a corner and people are leading entirely different lives."

Councillor Bob McCann, of Sheffield City Council, said: "I think what Richard has captured in his work is a community that has bonded from the inside.

"It's very interesting to see the similarities between neighbours from different cultures as well as the things that make their lives unique."

Mr Hanson's photographs go on display in the Pakistani Advice Centre in Page Hall Road on Monday.
